Moonshine Stainless Still -

    Moonshing Goes Legal

  • It's quite literally a still on the hill where they run off more than just a gallon or two -- it's the home of the Virginia Sweetwater Distillery, a part of the Appalachian Mountain Spirits Company. "It took a lot of tweaking here and tweaking there, finding that if we add just another component, while it seems like a small amount it can make a big difference on the richness of the flavor at the backside," distiler Ross Lishen says. "[It's to] help draw an awareness from the tourist trade that hey, we're here and this is a big part of the heritage in this part of the state of Virginia," he said. But those are aged spirits that are in the whiskey family versus the Virginia Sweetwater, which is a moonshine," Lishen said.

Does the fruit you use really affect the flavor of moonshine?

I made it a few years ago and the still i made is how one should be copper and stainless. For the wash i just used formented sugar water and bread yeast. Well it tasted nasty and smelled nasty but got me wasted. Smelled and tasted like booze but was just nasty which I read it tastes nasty. Even if made week like 10% it still smelled just as bad and tasted like EWWW. If my wash was made with a fruit would it actually taste good? Like the whiskey is made from corn/corn meal. Vodka is potatos. Brandy is fruits. Will using any of them fruits really make it taste better than just plain sugar water or does it all taste the same? Like is using fruit pointless now days? Back in the days i think they just used fruit or startch foods as the sugar. Or does what you use actually change the flavor?

It should, if you do it right. The "apple pie" version is the best tasting.

affordable pot with clampable lid (moonshining)?

i am interested in moonshining and i feel as i am adequately prepared but i am not looking to spend 60 dollars or so on a pot for the still so i am looking for someone who can point me in the direction of a stainless steel pot that is 6 to 10 quarts and the lid is easily clampable to keep it airtight. New pressure cookers are to expensive 50 bucks for 4 or 6 quarts at walmart. specific brands or names of pots would be helpful thanks for any help

If you're in the USA, moonshining is illegal everywhere despite that TV show about it. That's not a real show, it's just actors, and they don't really make moonshine. A lot of people have gotten in trouble since that show came on TV because they think moonshine has become OK to do. There are products in liquor stores that call themselves moonshine, but they are made by licensed distilleries. If you already know all that, then you're asking for help to break the law, and that's agianst the rules here.

Chasing the White Dog, An Amateur Outlaw's Adventures in Moonshine

Creator: Max Watman | History - 2010-02-16

A 10-gallon moonshine still might cost about $1,000 if it were copper. And the stainless-steel ones for sale at places like Mile Hi Distilling were cheaper— around $350 for an 8-gallon still—but they were stainless, and most of them were column ...

Publisher: Simon & Schuster

About this book
In Chasing the White Dog, journalist Max Watman traces the historical roots and contemporary story of hooch. He takes us to the backwoods of Appalachia and the gritty nip joints of Philadelphia, from a federal courthouse to Pocono Speedway, profiling the colorful characters who make up white whiskey's lore. Along the way, Watman chronicles his hilarious attempts to distill his own moonshine -- the essential ingredients and the many ways it can all go wrong -- from his initial ill-fated batch to his first successful jar of 'shine. It begins in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, where drunk and armed outlaws gathered in the summer of 1794. George Washington mustered 13,000 troops to quell the rebellion, but by the time they arrived, the rebels had vanished; America's first moonshiners had packed up their stills and moved on. From these moonshiners who protested the Whiskey Tax of 1791, to the bathtub gin runners of the 1920s, to today's booming bootleg businessmen, white lightning has played a surprisingly large role in American history. It touched the election of Thomas Jefferson, the invention of the IRS, and the origins of NASCAR. It is a story of tommy guns, hot rods, and shot houses, and the story is far from over. Infiltrating every aspect of small-scale distilling in America, from the backyard hobbyists to the growing popularity of microdistilleries, Chasing the White Dog provides a fascinating, centuries-long history of illicit booze from an unrepentant lover of moonshine.

Noodling for Flatheads, Moonshine, Monster Catfish, and Other Southern Com

Creator: Burkhard Bilger | Travel - 2001-03-22

“In a normal operation,” he says, “we use six eight- hundred-gallon stills—we call 'em black pots—each of which can make about a hundred gallons of moonshine. A black pot is really just a four-by-eight strip of stainless steel with its ends ...

Publisher: Scribner

About this book
The Old South is slow to give up its secrets. Though satellite dishes outnumber banjo players a thousand to one, most traditions haven't died; they've just gone into hiding. Cockfighting is illegal in forty-eight states, yet there are three national cockfighting magazines and cockpits in even the most tranquil communities. Homemade liquor has been outlawed for more than a century, yet moonshiners in Virginia still ship nearly one million gallons a year. Some of these pastimes are ancient, others ultramodern; some are illegal, others merely obscure. But the people who practice them share an undeniable kinship. Instead of wealth, promotion, or a few seconds of prime time, they follow dreams that lead them ever deeper underground. They are reminders, ultimately, that American culture isn't as predictable as it seems-that the weeds growing between its cracks are its most vital signs of life. In these masterfully crafted essays, Burkhard Bilger explores the history and practice of eight such clandestine worlds. Like John McPhee and Ian Frazier, he introduces us to people whose spirit of individualism keeps traditions alive, from a fifty-something female coon hunter who spends 340 nights a year in the woods to a visionary frog farmer and a man whose arms are scarred by the eighty-pound catfish he catches by hand. A fluid combination of adventure, history, and humor, Noodling for Flatheads is evocative, intelligent, and wonder-fully weird-a splendid antidote to the sameness of today's popular culture.

Safety First: Why Stainless Steel Matters in an Alcohol Still

I did quite a bit of research in figuring out which alcohol still to buy. I thought I would share my thinking regarding how I went about finally deciding on this particular still. The first consideration I had was what material the still should be made of. Almost all alcohol stills are made of either copper or stainless steel. The vast majority of stills are made from copper and relatively few stills are made entirely from stainless steel. Those still makers that use copper will claim that they use this material because it is traditional for stills and because it provides quick thermal conductivity. And on both counts they are correct--prohibition era moonshine stills were often made of copper and copper does provide fast heat conductivity. However, I feel that fast heat conductivity is really not important for a still because stills are used at low to moderate temperatures and distilling sessions tend to be relatively long. I really can't see a... 5/5 Gary A. Bloom (Cincinnati, OH) - See all my reviews, February 17, 2009

Not so big that you have to make gallons at a time to get a decent batch.. and not so small that you don't get a full shot... this does the trick.. right in your kitchen.. no mess and tubes everywhere due to using ice to condense. This product is all stainless, very well made and adaptable to various heights depending on your heat source or the collection glass you use. Makes the best distilled product! It reminds me of the M*A*S*H 4077 tv show... make a glass at a time.If you utilize essentials (ummm.. or ummmm spirits) this will pay for itself in no time... just pennies to make your own stuff.. good tasting stuff..... Now there is an EASY and SAFE way to distill your own hard alcohol at home.
Extremely Easy to Use -- Comes with easy to understand instructions that will have you quickly distilling. And unlike most stills, TableTop Still requires NO running water--eliminating the need for complicated cooling tube hookups.
Ironclad Money Back Guarantee: An entirely risk-free 90 day trial period. If you are not completely satisfied, simply return it within 90 days for a full refund, including all shipping costs both ways.
Completely Safe -- Made entirely of premium Type 304 stainless steel which will not react with liquids that you are distilling.
Compact 1/2 gallon size is perfect for getting started with distillation. Starting with a 12% alcohol solution (such as wine), it will yield approximately 7 ounces of hard alcohol. Starting with a 20% alcohol solution (such as mash made from yeast available at most brew supply stores), it will yield approximately 12 ounces of hard alcohol.
